Joan is a befriender volunteer with Ashburton Community Care. She is helping to connect with people.

Joan says:

“There are people who are on the periphery of the community who don’t see other people very often.

“The people I visit enjoy having somebody to talk to.

“It is a lovely feeling because we’re all human beings.”

You could make a real difference to someone’s quality of life just by being you!

Befriending is a one-to-one, non-judgemental relationship where you volunteer your time to support and encourage someone. Many people benefit from the support of a befriender at a time of change in their life or when they are socially isolated due to illness or old age.
The people most suited to befriending are those who are interested in other people, are good listeners, are reliable, and have 2-3 hours to commit each week. Often previous experience is not needed. It’s more about who you are than what you’ve done.
